Liverpool’s transfer window finally came alive yesterday when they decided to press ahead with a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Reds are the only Premier League side yet to make a signing this summer but that could be about to change, with The Athletic confirming that Zubimendi is inclined to accept Liverpool’s offer if they trigger the £51m release clause in his contract.

The elegant midfielder, who was part of Spain’s Euro 2024 squad, is held in high regard in footballing circles, with Xabi Alonso referring to Zubimendi as a player all coaches would want.

Liverpool are edging closer to signing Zubimendi but if Fabrizio Romano’s words are to be believed, they aren’t quite done in the transfer market.

The Italian journalist believes Liverpool won’t just shut up if they manage to sign Zubimendi, with the Reds continuing to assess the market for opportunities as we enter the business end of the summer transfer window.

“Trust me, it could be not over for Liverpool,” said Romano on his YouTube channel.

“They are also working on other opportunities in the market and Liverpool will be busy in the market in August. Now they are looking to sign Zubimendi, but there could be more.”

Do Liverpool need further incomings if they sign Martin Zubimendi?

Zubimendi is believed to be viewed as the ideal number six for Arne Slot, who wants midfielders in this role to be able to adapt to a more possession-based brand of football.

The lack of an out-and-out number six remains the only gaping hole in Liverpool’s squad currently, so Zubimendi’s arrival would mean the Anfield hierarchy would have addressed their biggest weakness.

However, with still over three weeks to go, Liverpool are expected to keep a keen eye on the market and potential sales could dictate their next steps.

Liverpool agreed to sign Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer, but the deal fell through as Newcastle United decided to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to raise funds and fall in line with the PSR guidelines.

If the Reds do have some spare funds remaining it may be that they push on with a deal for Gordon later in the window, though, as Slot appears to want some attacking additions to give him real options in the forward areas.
