Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle could have third signing sealed by Wednesday

Newcastle United could have a third signing through the door by Wednesday, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Magpies have been busy in the January transfer window in pursuit of Premier League safety.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have joined the Newcastle ranks over the past fortnight.

However, there’s still a lot of work for the Magpies hierarchy to do in the market.

Over the past few days, Newcastle have been heavily linked with a host of centre-backs.

The Magpies have apparently been in talks with Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

Sven Botman was previously linked with Newcastle, while Benoit Badiashile is also apparently on their radar.

Newcastle could certainly do with a new centre-back given their weak defence.

The Magpies have conceded 43 league goals this season – only Norwich have shipped more.

“They want to have him as soon as possible”

Speaking on Newcastle Fans TV’s YouTube channel, Romano provided an update on PIF’s centre-back search.

Romano had the following update to provide when it came to Newcastle’s search for a new defender:

“At the moment, the focus is on new signings,” said the renowned transfer guru.

“Because they need to have new faces, new players and in particular in the defence.

“So I’m told [that the] board, they’re working to have the new centre-back in maybe Wednesday or Thursday.

“But they want to have him as soon as possible.

“So I’m sure that Monday/Tuesday will be really busy with the new signings.

“And then outgoings maybe in the final week of the window, they will have some sort of opportunity on this point.”

Newcastle threw away a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 with Watford last time out.

Prior to that, the Magpies fell to a humbling 1-0 defeat to Cambridge United in the FA Cup third round.

While the team is slowly taking shape under Howe’s tutelage, hopefully Newcastle can bring in more much-needed reinforcements.
