Liverpool have contacted Braga over the potential signing of defender David Carmo, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The centre-back is one of European football’s most highly-rated youngsters and has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while.

The Premier League champions are desperate to add defenders to their ranks ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been injured long-term, with Joel Matip now ruled out after sustaining ankle ligament damage against Tottenham last week.

Carmo has played 17 times for the Liga NOS outfit this season, including five times in the Europa League.

Liverpool have all but agreed a deal to sign Ben Davies and his arrival is set to be announced imminently.

Having spent the majority of his career in the Championship, however, the Reds are hoping to land another centre-back today.

Carmo stands at 6ft 4in and likes to play out from the back.

He has come through the youth ranks at Braga and also has seven caps for the Portugal under-2o team to his name,

Carmo’s release clause sits at £35 million but it seems unlikely that Liverpool will be parting with that sort of cash today.

They are also in talks over a loan-to-buy deal for Ozan Kabak and a similar deal might be sought for Carmo.

Liverpool have Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips on the books and the latter impressed at West Ham yesterday.

Adding another centre-back or two will allow Klopp to get Jordan Henderson and Fabinho back into central midfield.

That can only bode well for Liverpool and would give them a strong chance of chasing Manchester City down at the top of the Premier League.
