Aston Villa are set to open talks with Marseille concerning a potential deal for Morgan Sanson, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Dean Smith’s men find themselves in a fantastic position in the Premier League. They are 10 points off top spot, but they have played two fewer games than the league leaders.
And with a real opportunity ahead, it appears that Villa are looking to strengthen their options further this month.
According to Romano, the Villans are keen on Sanson. He has claimed that they are set to open discussions with the Ligue 1 side about a move for the 26-year-old.
Sky Sports reported in December that Marseille want £22.5 million for Sanson.
He has scored two goals and provided three assists in the top flight this season. And he would provide depth in a number of positions for Smith.
As shown by Whoscored.com, he averages 1.9 tackles per game. Matty Cash and Trezeguet are the only Aston Villa players to average more in the Premier League (Whoscored). He also averages 1.1 key passes per game.
He has predominantly featured in a central midfield role this season. But he can also move further forward, which may take some of the pressure off the likes of Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley.
It appears that there is work to be done before anything is agreed. But Romano’s tweet suggests that Villa are ready to get the ball rolling on a potential move.
