Fabian Schar’s acrobatic clearance highlights his importance for Newcastle

Fabian Schar has played seven games this season.

Newcastle United picked up another point in yesterday’s Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion. And Fabian Schar played a major role in helping Newcastle draw the game. His stunning goalline clearance is yet another indication of just how crucial he is.

The Magpies moved out of the relegation zone with that point – at least until today’s fixtures are played. Schar is an important cog in the Newcastle line-up and he showed it again yesterday.

Schar was right at the heart of the most pivotal part of the game. Aaron Connolly thought he had given Brighton the lead with a delicate dink over Martin Dubravka. The Slovakian stopper was beaten and it looked set to be a goal.

But Schar came racing out of nowhere to somehow scramble the ball clear. The Swiss defender raced back and performed an acrobatic overhead clearance on the goal line to save Newcastle by the finest of margins.

Clean sheet

With Schar’s commanding presence at the back, Newcastle kept another clean sheet. Steve Bruce’s men could not break through Brighton at the other end but the clean sheet will be a welcome bonus.

This is Newcastle’s first clean sheet of the season and this is a major confidence boost. Bruce has Schar to thank for helping to keep Brighton at bay with another assured display.

Schar’s presence makes a difference

There is no doubt that Newcastle are a better defensive unit when Schar is playing. The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and he is playing some excellent football for the Geordies.

Schar makes a major difference when he is playing. Newcastle cannot afford to lose him in the January window. If they do, a relegation battle could be on the cards.
