Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar has admitted he is desperate not to lose one of the key figures at the club.

The Switzerland international is one of a few Newcastle players who are still yet to enjoy their summer break due to the ongoing international tournaments.

However, at least one of Eddie Howe’s representing players will be sent home on Saturday when England face Switzerland in the quarter finals of this summer’s European Championship.

Fabian Schar will be coming up against Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon in Dusseldorf with both nations eyeing a place in the final four.

But the Newcastle centre-back has now admitted he is hoping to see one of the key figures around the club stick around for a little longer.

Fabian Schar comments on future of key Newcastle figure

Already this summer, Newcastle have been forced to lose two of their exciting youngsters due to the PSR debacle.

Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were the two players which were sacrified to balance the books at St James’ Park.

However, there were real fears over losing a player of even more importance to the club with Gordon and Alexander Isak heavily linked with moves away.

But there is someone else on Tyneside who defender Schar is afraid of losing.

Speaking on Friday to the Daily Mail, Schar commented on the future of Howe over links to potentially succeeding Gareth Southgate as the England manager.

“I actually hope he will stay at Newcastle,” Schar said.

“Because if you see the work he has done at Newcastle over the last few years, he has a lot of quality and knows how to handle a big club and a big team.

“For myself as well, he has done so well. I am really happy to have him as manager. Hopefully he stays at Newcastle, that is the only thing I can think of.”

Eddie Howe could replace Gareth Southgate as England manager

There are serious question marks as to whether Southgate will call it a day as the England manager following this summer’s Euros.

England have stuttered through the competition so far with the fans showing their frustrations towards the manager’s tactics.

With speculation over his future, a number of names have been linked as his potential replacement.

And as the report from the Mail claims, Howe is likely to be the preferred candidate for the job by the FA if Southgate is to stand down.

It’s a move which the Newcastle players are clearly also hoping does not come to fruition over the coming months.
