Fabian Schar says Newcastle teammate Joelinton has changed a lot under Eddie Howe

Fabian Schar has revealed that his Newcastle United teammate Joelinton has changed a lot since Eddie Howe took charge of the club.

The Magpies signed the Brazilian for a then-club-record £40 million from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim (BBC). A lot was expected of Joelinton, but he really struggled under Bruce. However, he looks like a completely different player now.

Joelinton was arguably Newcastle’s most criticised player when Bruce was at the helm.

The Brazilian was asked to become the club’s main goalscorer – even though it was clear as day that he wasn’t playing in a position in which he was comfortable in.

Howe came in and decided to use Joelinton in central midfield. Since that decision was made, the 26-year-old has looked phenomenal, and he is one of the reasons why the Magpies have been so good over the last few months.

Speaking about Joelinton’s transformation, Schar told Stadium Astro: “I knew Joelinton before because I played in Germany with him and I know the quality he has.

“I always knew he was a top player he was just lacking confidence.

“The manager has changed everything. You see him playing now, I think he’s unbelievable. For our team, he is so important, and the work he puts in and the position he plays is unbelievable.

“In a short period, he has changed a lot, and he’s one of our best players.”

TBR View:

Joelinton should get a lot of credit for the way he has turned his Newcastle career around, but Howe is the man who deserves the most praise for his decision to change the Brazilian’s position.

The Magpies looked destined to go down when Howe took charge of the club. Nobody really gave them a chance to survive, let alone finish 12th in the table like they did last season.

Newcastle look even better this term. The way Howe’s men performed against Manchester City last weekend was absolutely incredible. Even though they only ended up with a point, you can argue that the Toon were much better than the defending Premier League champions.

Joelinton played the full 90 minutes against City in his new role, and we must say, he’s getting better and better at it – all thanks to Howe!
