Right-Midfield: David Silva (Manchester City)

Another week, another game for David Silva to flex his muscles. He was a menace as usual for hosts Middlesbrough, as City exerted their authority on the game early, with the Spaniard putting the Citizens in front as early as the third minute. From there, the ‘Boro had no reply, and Silva was the midfield lynch-pin once more, finding space and playing passes in behind to ensure goalkeeper Brad Guzan was given a full workout.

Centre-Midfield: N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea)

Chelsea’s silent catalyst for success was a cut above in the Blues’ victory over Manchester United. With the Red Devils limited by injury, they needed £89million man Paul Pogba to produce, but Kanté’s brilliance in midfield in breaking-up play and getting hold of the ball soon ensured Chelsea took the game by the scruff of the neck, and the influence of the mercurial former Juventus man began to fade before he’d even got into the game.

BBC Sport’s Martin Keown was quoted as saying “Kanté wasn’t man of the match, but more men of the match. He was everywhere”, and given his work-rate, few would argue. He capped off his performance with the decisive moment of the game, picking his spot from around 20 yards out and drilling the ball beyond David de Gea to propel Chelsea to the semi-final.

Centre-Midfield: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)

Mauricio Pochettino’s call to introduce Eriksen ahead of Vincent Janssen following Harry Kane’s injury was an interesting one, but it paid off fairly quickly as the Dane set about making a nuisance of himself, and a five-star performance from the midfielder followed, and he began the rout by firing into the bottom corner after Dele Alli’s chest-down to initiate a painful afternoon for the visiting Lions.

A force throughout the tie, finding space, playing passes and unafraid to try is luck at goal, Eriksen was just too hot to handle for Millwall, and he laid on an assist in the second-half, unselfishly playing the ball into Dele Alli to tap home for Tottenham’s fourth of the day.

Left-Midfield: Eden Hazard (Chelsea)

An Eden Hazard performance almost feels incomplete without a goal, but his performance is worthy of credit on this occasion after running the Red Devils ragged for the entirety of their quarter-final tie.

A handful throughout, Hazard’s turn of pace embarrassed the United defence on a number of occasions, leaving Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo trailing in his wake so often that the only option for the visitors was to repeatedly scythe the Belgian down. He was just too tricky for midfielder Ander Herrera to deal with either, and the Spaniard soon saw red for a second bookable offence. A debatable card, but a foolish one to receive for a foul on Hazard moments after Phil Jones escaped punishment for a foul on the same player. He just squirmed away from all of them on the night. A stunning performance to watch.
