Newcastle United are currently preparing for tonight’s FA Cup Third Round replay against Blackburn Rovers.
Amid a relegation battle, this fixture is an unnecessary add-on to their busy schedule and changes could be made again.
Rafa Benitez gave a few fringe players a chance when Newcastle hosted Blackburn at St James’ Park but had to be saved by a late Matt Ritchie penalty making it 1-1.
Newcastle are currently 18th in the Premier League table and face a potentially season-defining match this weekend.
Even with 16 games left to play, their home game against Cardiff City – who sit one point ahead of Newcastle – is a genuine six-pointer.
Benitez’s primary focus will be on that, meaning that the replay against Blackburn tonight will irritate him.
But this is the ideal chance for Jamie Sterry to prove his point to Benitez and save his Newcastle career.
The 23-year-old played in the first game against Rovers but struggled to impress with Bradley Dack causing him all sorts of problems.
Age is no longer on the academy product’s side and many Newcastle fans do not believe he has the quality to cut it at the club.
Sterry has not been trusted with any Premier League minutes this season and Newcastle being knocked out of the cup would completely end his hopes of first-team football.
Unless he can impress against Blackburn tonight, Sterry might be playing his final game in black and white.
