Newcastle United have been linked with Atalanta midfielder Ederson in recent months.

Back in November, Calciomercato reported that the Magpies had set their sights on the 24-year-old and were willing to spend around £17.5million on him.

More recently, Tutto Atalanta reiterated that Newcastle are in the race for Ederson alongside Juventus.

The Italian outlet also claimed that the Bergamo outfit is after €35million (around £30million) for their player.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are currently short of numbers in midfield. Joelinton, Elliot Anderson and Joe Willock are injured, while Sandro Tonali is suspended until the end of the season.

Newcastle United eyeing ‘versatile’ midfielder Ederson

With that in mind, Newcastle may well look to intensify their interest in Ederson and potentially make a bid in the January transfer window.

South American football expert Tim Vickery, speaking on Sky Sports News, suggested that Ederson would be a good shout for Eddie Howe’s Magpies.

The Brazilian midfielder has numerous great traits and virtues that are reminiscent of Bruno Guimaraes, according to Vickery.

“He’s a strong, well-built central midfielder,” he said. “He’s strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box and has a strong personality as well.

“The first thing I remember about him is his professional debut for Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide at the time.

“They were relegated in dreadful form but even in that bad context, he stood out.

“So, a lot of virtues and I just wonder if all these virtues may remind you of another Brazilian already wearing the shirt of Newcastle.

“You could see this either as back-up in the squad to Bruno Guimaraes, or, with Newcastle being under pressure with financial fair play, and potential big-money offers coming in for Bruno Guimaraes, you could see him as a possible replacement.”

Normally when you hear that a club is after a player who’s very similar to one already in their ranks, that might make some people think, “what’s the point? We’ve already got one such player.”

However, an exception would likely be made when it comes to Bruno Guimaraes, who has very quickly become a St James’ Park icon.

It’s good to hear Vickery say that Ederson has similar traits to Bruno, making him a good back-up or, if the worst comes to worst, a potential replacement for the Selecao star.

And at £30million, he wouldn’t be overly expensive for the Magpies.
