‘Expensive mistake’, ‘Seriously though’: Some Southampton fans react to club’s ‘tweet of the year’

Some Southampton fans have been reacting on social media after their club reached an agreement for Wesley Hoedt to join Anderlecht on a permanent transfer.

The Saints shared a brief statement on their club website on Thursday announcing a deal in principle to sell Hoedt. His move to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League outfit is expected to be finalised on June 21.

Hoedt spent last term away from St Mary’s on a season-long loan deal with Serie A side Lazio. The 27-year-old made 26 appearances for the Stadio Olimpico natives across all competitions, including seven outings in the Champions League.

Hoedt has not featured for Southampton since November 2018 when the centre-half made the last of 45 appearances for the club in a 3-2 defeat at Fulham. He then joined La Liga outfit Celta Vigo on loan in the following January before a spell with Royal Antwerp.

Is It Harder To Win Than The Euros Than The World Cup?!

Southampton paid Lazio £15m for Hoedt in 2017, with former vice-chairman Les Reed expecting a lot from the Dutchman. He claimed, via BBC Sport, that the then-23-year-old was “one of the most promising young defenders in Europe” at the time.

The six-cap Netherlands international featured prominently in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans following his move to the Premier League. But Hoedt fell to the side under Mark Hughes and failed to regain a place at St Mary’s.

Southampton have now sold Hoedt to Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee with a year remaining on his £60,000-per-week contract. The Jupiler Pro League outfit, managed by Vincent Kompany, ended last season fourth in the table.

Southampton fans react as Hoedt joins Anderlecht

But some Southampton fans are not disappointed to see Hoedt join Anderlecht as Ralph Hasenhuttl continues to reshape his squad. That’s because they deem his stay on the south coast to have been an expensive mistake.

A few also deem Hoedt to have been part of the deadwood Hasenhuttl needs to offload in the summer transfer market. While others were even surprised to hear that a club was willing to take the centre-half off their hands.

However, not all Southampton fans were glad to see Anderlecht agree a deal in principle for Hoedt. Instead, they believe he could have played a role in Hasenhuttl’s ranks next season while the Austrian puts plans in place to shape a better squad.
