Exclusive – Take Us Home: Leeds United co-producer recalls interview with Marcelo Bielsa

Amazon Prime’s Take Us Home: Leeds United co-producer Stevie Rowe has recalled staging an interview with Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa for season 2 – telling The Boot Room that the Argentine spoke for an hour, despite being asked one question.

NEO Studios’ Head of Production Rowe worked tirelessly with his colleagues to organise a sit-down interview with Bielsa. It was the first interview Bielsa had agreed to in 24 years, other than press conferences.

Rowe and the rest of Take Us Home staff managed to get Bielsa to do an interview, but it was like no-other. Rowe recalled that Bielsa did not want a big crew, meaning the Director of Photography (DOP) became a reporter to ask questions.

Rowe also reminisced of how the DoP had a list of questions, as you would, but Bielsa only answered the first with an hour-long response. At the end of the hour, he stood up, removed his microphone and left – keeping in style with his press conference style.

“He was a real unique character,” Rowe recalled, during an interview with The Boot Room. “We weren’t allowed a big crew in, the DOP doubled up as a reporter so we didn’t have too many bodies in there.

“He had a list of questions for Bielsa, as you would. He asked the first question, and then Bielsa went on an hour-long response. That was it. At the end of that he stopped, took his microphone off and shook our hands.”

Bielsa is renowned for the odd huge press conference, including the lecture he gave after Spygate emerged. He is more than willing to open up in a press conference, but for Rowe and his team to get Bielsa talking face to face, is quite something.

His desire to talk in front of a small crew is fitting with his humble personality, as is his decision to answer just one question and then leave. The quotes he gave overlapped the second series, intertwining with Russell Crowe.

Bielsa is next in the dugout on Monday night, when Leeds play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers. A win sees Leeds go third.

Speaking to LeedsUnited.News, Rowe also spoke on what it was like to work with the former Athletic Bilbao boss.
