Exclusive: Nigel Martyn backs Leeds United’s reported pursuit of Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori

Nigel Martyn has told The Boot Room that if Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is available to sign on loan in the January transfer window, then Leeds United have to “go and get him” amid reports the Whites are interested in the England star.

Leeds are lacking at centre-back, an issue that has evolved into a crisis after Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United. Captain Liam Cooper hobbled off moments after scoring for the Whites, joining Robin Koch and Diego Llorente on the treatment table.

Tomori, 23, has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, meanwhile. A one-time England international, the £14,500-a-week (Spotrac) defender is being overlooked for the likes of Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

TalkSPORT claim Leeds have expressed an interest in Tomori, but he is expected to join French club Rennes. However, Martyn thinks that if Tomori is available – then Leeds have to make a move and lure him to Elland Road, amid the current injury crisis.

“If you can get a Chelsea player, they obviously don’t think he is rubbish. Depending on the injuries Leeds need bodies and better the quality – the better it is. If there’s a chance, go and get him. You’ve got to stop those goals,” Martyn told The Boot Room.

TBR’s view – Tomori would be a sensational Leeds signing

The Whites need a central defender in January, but one that fits into the Leeds style. They need a player that can help them solve their set-piece issues and solid in the air – but also boasts the ability of being able to play out from the back.

Tomori is just as good with the ball at his feet, as he is powerful in the air. If Leeds can nab Tomori on loan for the rest of the Premier League season then that would be an excellent bit of business – but Leeds certainly have a fight to get him.
