The March international break is always a nervy time for Tottenham and other clubs – as key players jet off with their countries at a crucial stage of the season.
Spurs are presumably desperate to avoid any major setbacks as Ange Postecoglou attempts to get the north Londoners back in the UEFA Champions League, and so far, all is well in terms of senior players.
However, there has now been an injury – quite a bad one, by the looks of it – for a young Tottenham player…
Lucas Bergvall suffers injury
Well – fortunately for Postecoglou – this injury will not directly impact Tottenham’s UEFA Champions League chances, as Lucas Bergvall was loaned back to Djurgarden after an £8.5m deal was agreed in January.
Johan Lange, Technical Director at Tottenham, has since confirmed that the 18-year-old will be involved in first-team duties throughout pre-season at Spurs, although the Sweden international’s chances of impressing at Hotspur Way this summer could now be in jeopardy.
Bergvall was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge from Mihail Dimitrievski in the 47th minute earlier on Tuesday, as Sweden’s U21 side took on North Macedonia’s U21s in a UEFA EURO U21 qualifier.
The 21-year-old was given a straight red card for the lunge, which left the Tottenham new boy rolling around in agony.

Bergvall – who Postecoglou called “exciting” – did try to continue, but was eventually withdrawn in the 60th minute after finding himself unable to keep going.
It comes as a real shame for the Swede and also for Tottenham – hopefully, there is no ligament damage, and the £8.5m man can return to action as soon as possible.
Tottenham will be paying close attention
By the sounds of it, Bergvall has a genuine chance of becoming a first-team option at Tottenham next season, so Spurs will surely be paying this injury close attention.
Amid doubts over the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele in north London, Postecoglou is presumably aiming to use his January recruit as a replacement for one of those midfielders, although a serious injury would potentially mean Spurs dip back into the transfer market for a solution.

That is the danger of this March international break – it can not only derail the business end of the season for a club, but it can also have a significant impact on summer transfer plans.
Hopefully, Bergvall’s injury is not as bad as it looks, and he can get back to the pitch quickly.
