'Exceptional': Everton player is just as good as £200k-a-week Champions League star, says pundit
The pair came up against each other in the final of Euro 2020, with the Italian lifting the trophy for his nation after a penalty shoot-out.
Pickford saved two penalties but ended up on the losing side, while Donnarumma went on to scoop the Player of the Tournament.
Speaking to England’s official YouTube channel, former Liverpool goalkeeper James lavished praise on Pickford.
James on Pickford
He said: “Jordan, for England, has been exceptional.
“The last tournament, the Euros, I always say that he was as good as Donnarumma, who was I think player of the tournament in the end.
“Jordan Pickford is at the moment, out and out number one, the guy that all of us England fans are relying on to bring the trophy home.”
Donnarumma could easily have been the most valuable goalkeeper in the world but he let his contract run down before the end of the Euros.
He joined PSG on a free transfer after that tournament, and Sky Sports report that he is earning £200,000-a-week in the French capital.
Pickford has been sensational, never letting them down and he will be hoping that continues against Wales in the final group game tonight.
