‘Excellent news’: Some Leeds fans react after ‘exceptional’ prospect pens new deal

A number of Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to celebrate the news that Whites academy ace Alfie McCalmont has signed a new deal at Elland Road.

The 20-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a contract that ties him to the Premier League newcomers until the summer of 2024.

McCalmont came through the ranks at Thorp Arch and, according to Leeds Live, is one of Marcelo Bielsa’s favourite players in the Under-23s setup.

He featured regularly in Bielsa’s matchday squads last season and made his senior debut in the League Cup win over Salford City before featuring in the second-round loss to Stoke City.

McCalmont has also featured regularly for Northern Ireland Under-21s and won his first senior cap against Luxembourg last September.

Leeds Live has suggested that the youngster could be in line for a loan move next season to play senior football regularly.

The news has gone down well with quite a few Whites fans, who gave their thoughts on social media:

McCalmont’s signature follows the likes of Mateusz Bogusz, Oliver Casey and Bobby Kamwa to commit their futures to Leeds in recent weeks.

The Whites academy has also snapped up Joe Gelhardt, Cody Drameh and Dani van den Heuvel this summer.
