'Excellent' Aston Villa player's season has now gone from bad to worse - TBR View

Aston Villa‘s Tyrone Mings has not been included in the latest England squad, for the matches against Italy and Germany ahead.

Mings played the first two games of Euro 2020 and has been a near-fixture in the squad since his debut in 2019.

But he had a tough start to the season, when he was stripped as the Villa captain by Steven Gerrard, with the armband going to John McGinn.

He was dropped out of the side altogether and it could be argued he is only playing now because Diego Carlos has a long-term injury.

Mings dropping out of England picture at worst possible time

He did not get named in the squad for the summer matches, and rather than being a one-off, that looked like a precursor of things to come.

The likes of Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi look further ahead of him in the pecking order as it stands, and he is dropping out of the England picture at the worst possible time.

Gareth Southgate has always seemed to value the leadership of the man described as ‘excellent‘ by former Villa boss Dean Smith.

But it seems like Conor Coady is the man Southgate is looking to to provide that in a player within the squad who may not play every game.

Coady moved from Wolves to Everton on loan to try and get the gametime he needs to go to the World Cup and he is in this squad.

Mings stayed at Villa, where he is back in the side, and earning praise from Jamie Carragher, but he has plenty to do to go to the World Cup during a season which has just gone from bad to worse.
