'Exactly the same': Arteta shares what he'll do if £25m Arsenal star makes a mistake

Mikel Arteta faced the media today ahead of his side’s trip to face Manchester United and the Arsenal boss was quizzed about Nuno Tavares and Kieran Tierney.

After facing a ton of problems last season, Arsenal made it a priority to sign a back up to Tierney in the summer. Tavares came in as an unknown quantity, but he has surprised everyone and is now arguably the first-choice left-back.

Nobody would’ve predicted that at the start of the season and not many fans would’ve expected Tavares to keep his place in the side after his terrible mistake against Liverpool at Anfield.

However, Arteta kept his faith in him and he has now revealed that if Tierney comes back into the side and makes a mistake like Tavares did at Anfield, the Scotsman will receive the same kind of support and trust.

Arteta: I will fully support Tierney if he makes a mistake

Asked about the faith he kept in Tavares despite his mistake against Liverpool, Arteta said, as per Arsenal.com: “It was a tricky one and after what happened at Anfield and some individual errors that we had, we have to be very careful with the messages that we send to our players.

“I encourage my players to play with courage, to take risks, to make decisions and to be on the front foot and when they do that, if for any reason things don’t go our way or somebody makes a mistake, that’s when you have to show trust in the player because you want to build confidence and resilience.

“It’s not only for the player that’s playing, it’s also for the player that’s not playing (Tierney) to understand that part of that decision is to support and in their case, if it happens to them, I will do exactly the same thing.”

Arteta is absolutely right to keep his faith in Tavares. The young Portuguese defender did make a shocking mistake, but the support he received from the Arsenal boss helped him bounce back brilliantly in the very next game.

However, it really is a shame that a player as talented as Tierney has to sit on the bench more often than not. The Scotsman, signed by Unai Emery for £25 million in 2019 (Goal), is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

When he’s fully fit, there aren’t many who are as good as him, but he just has to wait for his chance now. Once he gets it, it will be interesting to see what Arteta will do if the ex-Celtic man makes a costly mistake in a big game.

If the Arsenal boss’ words are anything to go by, he will give Tierney his full support, and that is the right thing to do.
