Former Ukraine international Gennady Orbu has insisted West Ham are ‘sorry’ to have paid around £17.5 million to sign Andriy Yarmolenko from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The winger moved to London after spending just one season with the Germans.
He made 26 appearances across all competitions and scored six times.
Admittedly they’re not amazing statistics, but the Hammers identified him as a means of improving their squad.
In fairness, his record for Dynamo Kyiv was much more impressive having scored 136 across 11 seasons.
So far this season, Manuel Pellegrini has used Yarmolenko sparingly; starting the winger just once against AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup.
Some fans have called for him to feature more often, but ex-Ukraine international Orbu has not held back in his assessment of the situation.
‘The Londoners are sorry’
Orbu believes that Yarmolenko’s lack of game time thus far will see the player return to his homeland in the near future.
He thinks that, even though the season has only just begun, the winger will not make a success of him time at the London Stadium.
Speaking to Expres, he said: “Everything points to the fact that he will soon return to Dynamo Kiev. And we will note the fiasco of his foreign career.
“It is unlikely that Yarmolenko will be able to make a bright career in the UK. Unfortunately he does not even reach the level of West Ham, which is temporarily in the last place of the tournament table.
“The Londoners are sorry that they paid Borussia Dortmund as much as €20 million [£17.5 million].”
Jumping the gun?
Orbu’s comments seem incredibly harsh.
Yarmolenko was one of 10 new players to arrive at West Ham this summer.
It is a major transition period for the club at the moment, and Pellegrini is still getting to know his players and work out his best selection and system.
Yarmolenko is probably still just bedding in at his new club, and the Premier League is a big step up from what he’s been used to.
His time will come. The season will wear on and eventually Pellegrini will get round to using all the players in his squad.
To say West Ham are already ‘sorry’ to have spent £17.5 million on a player after just five games in is a little knee-jerk.
Yarmolenko may disappoint just as Orbu predicts, but it’ll be a lucky shout if it rings true from such an early stage.
