Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Brian Statham has confirmed on Twitter that his son Maxwell Statham has signed his first professional contract for Spurs.
Brian, 49, played 27 times for Spurs during the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons. He went on to play for Brentford for the majority of his career, as well as Gillingham, Reading and Bournemouth.
His son, 18-year-old Maxwell, has made 13 Under-18 Premier League appearances this season for Spurs at left-back, and was even given his debut for the second string back in February.
The teenager is able to play on the left side of defence or at centre-back, and his father spoke of his delight on Twitter as Maxwell put pen to paper on professional terms – posting a picture of his son signing the contract.
TBR’s view
At 18 years of age, it shows just how much potential Statham has to have already turned out for the club’s reserve side. Next season, he has a big chance of becoming a regular in the second string.
In regards to his first-team chances, Statham has the likes of Danny Rose, Ben Davies and Kyle Walker-Peters ahead of him in the pecking order. A season in the Under-23’s should be Statham’s aim.
