Ex-Tottenham man Stephen Kelly urges Antonio Conte to sign Romelu Lukaku, if Spurs sell Harry Kane
Stephen Kelly has told Sky Sports News (10.25AM, Friday) that Tottenham Hotspur have got to sign Romelu Lukaku, if Harry Kane leaves the club – but Antonio Conte joins. Conte is reportedly close to the Spurs job, but Kane remains keen to go and Spurs might need to sign a replacement.
Football London’s Alasdair Gold says Conte is on the verge of becomingthe next Tottenham manager. Kane, though, remains intent on leaving Tottenham. It is believed the England skipper thinks Spurs lack the quality to win trophies.
According to La Repubblica, 28-year-old Lukaku will be targeted by Conte if the ex-Chelsea man arrives at Spurs. Lukaku is a big fan of Conte, who has got the best out of the Belgian striker at Inter Milan over the past 12 months. Lukaku has scored 30 goals and laid on 10 assists in 44 games.
If Kane leaves, Kelly was asked who should replace the England skipper and whether Lukaku would be that man. He responded by stating Lukaku would be a stunning signing for Tottenham with Conte at the helm. Kelly believes any club in the world would like to have Lukaku at their club.
“Oh absolutely,” Kelly said on Sky Sports News, when asked if Spurs should sign Lukaku. “If you can get Lukaku to the club, if Kane is going, I think Lukaku is someone you would look at. He plays the way Conte likes, he is a proven goalscorer. His record at Belgium is remarkable.
“He has scored goals in the Premier League, he is a guaranteed goalscorer. I know things didn’t finish at United on great terms, but he is a proven striker and someone that everyone would love to have,” Kelly continued.
If Kane goes, Lukaku is the next best thing for Tottenham
Losing Kane will be a bitter blow for Tottenham, if he does go. Not only does it see Spurs lose their best player, but also a player that has come through Tottenham’s academy. It would be likes Chelsea losing Mason Mount, Liverpool losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, United losing Marcus Rashford.
Kane’s important to Spurs is more so than the aforementioned trio, though. He is literally the heartbeat. With Kane, they do well. Without him, they struggle. But if Spurs are to sell him, then Lukaku is the next best thing. Could Lukaku be tempted with a return to Spurs? Time will tell.
