Saint-Etienne hosted Bordeaux in a Ligue 1 clash on Sunday and there were three former Sunderland players on the pitch.
Wahbi Khazri was the hero for Saint-Etienne, scoring one and providing the assist for another to inspire a 3-0 win.
But it was yet another game without a goal for Josh Maja, who came on with just over 10 minutes to go but could not find the net.
Yann M’Vila was the other ex-Black Cat on the field. The former loanee lined up in central midfield for Saint-Etienne and helped to keep a clean sheet.
But it was Khazri who stole the headlines. The Tunisia international put Saint-Etienne 1-0 up just before the hour mark with a penalty kick after it was given by VAR.
And then the 28-year-old, who scored three goals in 42 games for Sunderland, teed up former Newcastle defender Mathieu Debuchy to double the lead.
But while Khazri shone, Maja was unable to make an impact from the bench. The 20-year-old had scored 15 goals in 24 league games before leaving Sunderland in January.
And he has still not found the net for Bordeaux, extending his goalless run to six matches at the weekend.
As well as the ex-Sunderland men, there were two other former North East-based players on display.
Former Newcastle pair Debuchy and Remy Cabella both played the full 90 minutes. Debuchy grabbed two goals and Cabella picked up a yellow card.
