Ex-Liverpool star Luis Diaz crumbles in five-goal DFB-Pokal thriller with 90+4 min winner

Luis Diaz did not give a good account of himself when Bayern Munich narrowly beat SV Wehen Wiesbaden 3-2 in the DFB-Pokal.

The Colombian left Liverpool for Bayern Munich in a £65 million move earlier this summer following unsuccessful negotiations to extend his contract at Anfield.

Diaz claimed all the domestic trophies, including the Premier League title last season, during his three-and-a-half-year spell in England.

His exit was followed shortly after by Darwin Nunez’s move to Al-Hilal as the pair made way for Arne Slot’s rebuild project at Anfield.

Although Diaz enjoyed a sensational Bundesliga debut, scoring a goal and providing two assists in a 6-0 win over RB Leipzig, he fell back into familiar habits on Wednesday evening.

Luis Diaz has a nightmare for Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal

Diaz enjoyed his most productive Liverpool campaign to date in his final year, contributing 17 goals and five assists across all competitions.

However, like his former teammate Nunez, the forward had a habit of missing big chances when it mattered most, particularly during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City in the 2023/24 campaign.

While Gary Neville lauded Diaz on the day, he missed three big chances to win the game for the Reds, which ultimately had a big say on how the title race would pan out that year.

And it seems Diaz is back to his usual tricks in Munich, as he would have become the main culprit had Bayern suffered an early DFB-Pokal exit.

Darwin Nunez is excelling in Saudi Arabia, albeit the standard of quality is nowhere near the same as it is in Germany, but Liverpool fans would like to see their former stars enjoy success away from Anfield.

Diaz is an exceptional player, but performances such as the one seen on Wednesday are not uncommon for the 28-year-old and something he must work to iron out from his game to avoid becoming another Sadio Mane.

Arne Slot will not regret his decision to sell Luis Diaz

Diaz spurned two golden chances in the first half and one more in the second, as Fatih Kaya single-handedly drew level for SV Wehen Wiesbaden scoring twice in the space of six minutes.

Former Premier League duo Harry Kane and Michael Olise had given their side a commanding lead and Bayern were forced to rely on Kane to convert from the penalty spot in the 94th minute to avoid a dramatic upset.

Cody Gakpo operated on the left flank for the majority of last season with Diaz moving into a more central role and the Dutchman has enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign with one goal and two assists in his first two starts.

Meanwhile, Rio Ngumoha has since been promoted to the senior squad since Diaz’s departure and the 16-year-old became the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history with his match-winner against Newcastle United.
