Ex-Liverpool player Jonjo Shelvey becomes unlikely Anfield hero

Jonjo Shelvey spent three years at Liverpool.

Jonjo Shelvey scored a crucial late goal to bolster Liverpool’s title hopes.

Six-and-a-half years after leaving Anfield, Shelvey has just boosted Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League. Now at Newcastle United, he scored a late equaliser against Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City were leading 2-1 at St James’ Park. Kevin De Bruyne scored a stunner late on but Shelvey matched that effort. He waited until the 88th minute to make his mark.

Newcastle had a free-kick on the edge of the box and Christian Atsu pulled it back for Shelvey. Man City left the 27-year-old unmarked and will be regretting this decision. Shelvey hit the ball first time and curled one into the bottom corner, beating Ederson in the City goal.

Liverpool then beat Brighton later in the day to stretch their lead over City to 11 points. Shelvey, who spent three years at Liverpool, has just given his former club a major helping hand in the title race.

Here are some tweets from grateful Liverpool fans celebrating Shelvey’s excellent and potentially crucial goal.
