Ex-Leeds striker Robbie Fowler makes Marcelo Bielsa claim

Robbie Fowler has told The Sunday Mirror (7/2; page 72) that he does wonder how far Leeds can progress while they concede so many goals, but insisted that he hopes that Marcelo Bielsa remains at Elland Road for some time to come yet.

Leeds have been one of the most entertaining sides in the Premier League this term. They have scored 36 goals and conceded 38 since sealing promotion.

The Whites have divided opinion at times. The large majority of Leeds supporters along with many pundits cannot seem to get enough of their style of football.

However, they have also come in for criticism for the number of defensive errors they have made.

Fowler admitted that he does have concerns about how often Leeds have to pick the ball out of their net. However, he insisted that he hopes Bielsa goes nowhere.

“I wonder sometimes if Leeds fans take a step back from the mad ride to wonder if the team is actually annoyingly inconsistent,” he told The Sunday Mirror (7/2; page 72).

“They concede too many, are vulnerable in areas he seems oblivious to and you could ask if they can progress with such glaring problems.

“But he’s a maverick. He’s entertainment, big box office. He’s now been at Leeds longer than any club on his CV. That says a lot about how much the fans love him. I hope that love affair continues.”

Of course, there are occasions when Leeds fans have been left frustrated by their results. Against Everton in midweek for example, they switched off on two occasions and were punished.

However, just as their style of play is the reason they can often end up in trouble, it is also the reason that they can take the game to anyone in the league.

It has also not been noted enough that Leeds have had injuries to deal with. Bielsa added two defenders to his ranks in the summer.

However, both Diego Llorente or Robin Koch have spent the large majority of the last couple of months on the sidelines. Llorente is yet to get through 90 minutes since arriving at Elland Road.

In their place, Bielsa has often had to show faith in Pascal Struijk. And although the 21-year-old has been a revelation in many ways, it should not be overlooked that his first start at centre-back for Leeds came when they faced Liverpool on the opening day of the season.
