It was reported by the Reading Chronicle earlier this month that Leeds United are one of the clubs interested in signing Reading star John Swift this summer.
The Whites will reportedly have to battle with Sheffield United for the 25-year-old.
Given the Blades’ success this season, it would not be too surprising if Leeds needed to make sure they got across the line in the promotion race to stand a good chance of signing Swift.
And for some, that may leave them a little cautious about getting carried away. Swift has been outstanding in the Championship – he has scored five goals and contributed 10 assists this term – but he has only made one appearance in the top flight.
So there may be an element of risk attached to any potential move.
But perhaps Leeds fans can take some encouragement from comments made by former Whites loanee, Lewis Baker.
Baker and Swift were on Chelsea’s books together for more than a decade. And the pair were reunited during the latter half of last season when Baker joined the Royals after his spell with the Whites was terminated prematurely.
And it was during his spell with Reading that Baker had some extremely high praise for Swift indeed.
“Swifty is an important player of the club,” said Baker, as reported by the Reading Chronicle in 2019. “He’s had fantastic seasons in the past and I think he can reach the top level of the game.
“He’s doing well for us at the moment and if we keep him fit he will definitely be an important player for us for the rest of the season.”
Ready for top flight chance?
Of course, if he joins, some Leeds fans may be tempted to reserve judgement until they have had a good chance to look at Swift in their side.
But what Baker’s comments reinforce along with his statistics from this season is that the midfielder boasts enormous potential.
And there are arguably few bosses better-equipped to help Swift realise that full potential, and live up to Baker’s billing, than Marcelo Bielsa.
