'Every 15 minutes': Kalvin Phillips makes claim about Marcelo Bielsa in England press conference today

Marcelo Bielsa’s legacy at Leeds United will continue for a long time to come.

The legendary manager revolutionised the club, and finally guided them back to the Premier League.

One of his most successful players, Kalvin Phillips, has been speaking to the press today, via Football Daily.

Phillips’ improvement was so great under Bielsa that he was called up by Gareth Southgate before playing in the Premier League.

He was a key player for Southgate at last summer’s Euros, but injury has hampered his involvement in Qatar.

The incredible emergence of Jude Bellingham, and fine form of Declan Rice, have seen Phillips fall down the pecking order.

However, Phillips has been brought on in each of England’s last two World Cup games.

He even managed to record an assist for Marcus Rashford’s second goal against Wales.

Phillips was talking to the press about his role in the England squad in Qatar.

And he believes that the work he did under Bielsa at Leeds has made him an ideal option for Southgate.

Phillips lauds work under Bielsa at the World Cup

The Manchester City midfielder was asked about what role he could play in Southgate’s current set-up.

In particular, if his versatility could help when England need to adapt how they play against different opposition.

“When I played at Leeds, I played under a manager that changed formation every 15 minutes,” Phillips said.

“So, I’m quite used to changing formation.

“Obviously, I played in that deeper number four role, but I did change positions quite a lot.

“I played centre-half, and stuff like that, so obviously if that happened during a game or if we needed to change formation, I’d be very comfortable doing it.”

Leeds fans will always have a soft spot for the midfielder, and he’ll always have a soft spot for Leeds.

Phillips admitted he’s been watching their games in the Manchester City dressing room this season.

He’s also still active in some Leeds WhatsApp chats, although it’s unlikely they’ll be sharing too many pleasantries when they play each other as soon as the Premier League restarts.

England fans could be lauding Bielsa like their Leeds counterparts if Phillips’ versatility comes up trumps in Qatar.
