Everton sporting director Marcel Brands is reportedly keen on a deal for AZ Alkmaar midfielder Teun Koopmeiners this summer. The Sun reports that Everton want the 16-goal AZ captain who could be available at a cut-price £12 million transfer fee.

Koopmeiners has inspired AZ to a title challenge in the now voided 2019-20 Eredivisie season, which has in turn led to calls for him to receive a first call-up to the Dutch national team.

Of course, that would mean working with former Everton manager Ronald Koeman.

In fact, Koeman is fully aware of Koopmeiners talents. Whilst yet to make a senior cap, the 22-year-old was called up to the 30-man longlist for Holland’s March international fixtures, which were subsequently called off because of the global health crisis.

Koeman eventually decided not to call up Koopmeiners, but as reported by Voetbal International, had kind words to say about him and AZ team-mate Owen Wijndal.

“There are a number of young boys standing up and especially Wijndal and Koopmeiners catch the eye. This is also to send a signal that they are doing very well.”

In fact, Koopmeiners also confirmed to VI that he had in fact spoken to Koeman about his international chances.

“A very nice appreciation. Two weeks ago I had a good conversation with the national coach, but then you do not immediately think: I will be in the preselection. So I didn’t expect it, but it is very beautiful.”

So it is clear that Koeman is something of a fan of this Everton transfer target.

A left-footed defensive player with an eye for goal? No wonder Koeman is warm to a player very much in his ilk.
