Everton are hopeful that Leighton Baines will stay at the club next season. The veteran left-back has been offered a one-year deal to remain at Goodison Park, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
According to The Liverpool Echo, this will mean Antonee Robinson again heading out on loan from Everton this summer.
Which, whilst likely frustrating for the USA international, is the best option.
With Lucas Digne likely to play whenever available for Everton next season Baines is being asked to act as back-up. Robinson fulfilling the same role would not help his development going forward.
He is also still not quite ready for first-team football at Everton.
His loan spell at Wigan Athletic last season was impacted halfway through by an ankle injury and he could use another season of regular first-team football.
Toward the end of last season, he was in fine form for Wigan, as they lost just one of their final nine games.
Next term he needs to continue that momentum, perhaps with a team battling at the other end of the Championship after two years of relegation struggle with Wigan and, previously Bolton Wanderers.
One more season and Baines will likely be gone. Robinson will have another year’s experience under his belt and be ready to challenge Digne for the left-back slot.
It is the perfect situation for Everton.
