Everton fell to a 2-0 defeat v Arsenal at the weekend. It was a result that barely felt fair considering the balance of play but Everton were wasteful in front of goal.

Arsenal, in the end, edged proceedings, with one man key to their success. Uruguayan international Lucas Torreira was sensational on his first Arsenal start in the heart of midfield.

The 22-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer for a fee reportedly in the region of £26 million. It came after an impressive season with Sampdoria and he also caught the eye at the World Cup in Russia.

Such form had Arsenal ready to sign him, but they were not alone. Another club reportedly keen were Everton. Calciomercato reported in an exclusive that Everton were in touch over bringing the Sampdoria midfielder to Goodison Park. However, they were said to be battling with both Napoli and Arsenal for the player, with the Gunners clearly winning that race.

Based on his performance at The Emirates at the weekend, Everton are certainly missing out.

Central midfield was an area Everton needed to improve this summer. However, they ended up having to take something of a gamble on the currently injured Portuguese international Andre Gomes.

Torreira looks like he has everything Everton sometimes miss in midfield. His composure, ball-winning ability, and passing range would have undoubtedly improved Everton this season.

It could be missing out on the Uruguayan is Everton’s biggest transfer regret from the summer.
