Everton’s Luke Garbutt critical of Mohamed Salah’s performance in Salzburg win

Liverpool came through a tough task against the impressive young Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League last night. Liverpool led 3-0 on the night before goals from Hwang Hee-Chan, Takumi Minamino, and Erling Braut Haland pulled Salzburg level. The reigning European champions did, however, secure the win when Mohamed Salah scored his second goal of the game, which ended 4-3 to Liverpool.

Salah, therefore, was the hero. But one Everton-owned player was not impressed with the performance of the Egyptian.

Luke Garbutt, who is currently out on loan at Ipswich Town, felt that Salah had a poor ‘all round’ game in last night’s clash.

Responding to a tweet from his former Wigan Athletic team-mate Craig Davies, now of Mansfield Town, Garbutt suggested Salah deserved some of the criticism coming his way after the game.

Salah was, of course, the match-winner so it is hard to find much fault in the impact he had for Liverpool last night. But there is no doubt his overall play has not yet been as good as it has in previous seasons for Liverpool.

Garbutt, who has not played a competitive game for Everton since December 2015, is currently in fine form at Portman Road. Everton fans will be pleased to see that, and that their outcast defender is being so critical of the enemy.

However, Garbutt might want to hope Ipswich don’t draw Liverpool in the FA Cup. If so, he will come up with Salah directly. At which point, Garbutt will hope the Liverpool star does not hold a grudge.
