Everton’s links to defender Gianluca Mancini are hardly surprising

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Gianluca Mancini this month.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport via The Liverpool Echo, Marco Silva is intrigued about the possibility of signing the Italian youth international, whose reputation has been steadily increasing over in Serie A.

The Toffees were linked with Mancini earlier on in the transfer window, and the new link suggests that there could be some genuine interest.

Everton have been leaking goals lately, with Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane looking shaky together.

They’ve also been struggling to score goals.

After a bright start to the season, Everton are fading and fresh impetus looks like it’s needed.

Mancini’s attacking threat

As well as being a solid defender, Mancini is actually a big threat at the other end of the pitch.

This season he has impressively managed to score five goals in 15 games from centre-half.

The 6ft 3in former Fiorentina prospect is extremely difficult to mark from set pieces and is a huge aerial threat for opposition defences.

Everton have been no strangers to signing goalscoring defenders down the years.

Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines were both major threats during their primes (25 goals and 38 goals respectively), and Phil Jagielka has bagged 18 times during his long stint at Goodison Park.

Former centre-half Joleon Lescott also had a big knack for scoring goals (17 for the Toffees).

Lucas Digne has already proven he knows where the goal is and Yerry Mina, although he hasn’t had much of a chance to show it yet, has a reputation for scoring goals from set pieces.

Were Mancini to pitch up at Goodison Park, it would certainly be in keeping with some of the defensive signings the club have made down the years.
