Everton lost yet again in the Premier League yesterday, with Burnley claiming a 1-0 win at Turf Moor. It was another dismal display from Marco Silva’s men and the pressure is now building on the Portuguese coach.
That is understandable, but the players have to take a long hard look at the way they conceded the crucial goal yesterday.
Once again, it came from a set-piece. Ashley Westwood’s deliberately overhit corner routine saw Jeff Hendrick arrive unmark at the far post to hammer home the winner.
If Everton had been caught out by this well-worked training ground ploy then fair enough. Burnley had clearly worked on this throughout the week and got just reward for a methodical approach.

However, Everton’s players knew this was in the repertoire.
In the first half, Burnley did the exact same routine, with Pickford saving Hendrick’s side-footed effort with his foot.
Yet, nobody picked up Hendrick the second time around and it cost Everton a point on the road.
It speaks for the lack of leaders in the Everton defence, the lack of adaptability and lack of ownership. Nobody seems to be stepping up to take control and that is the big issue for Silva and the Everton team at present.
The target for the season was to break the top six. At this rate, Everton will be lucky to finish outside the bottom six.
