Everton’s keenness to keep Baines for another season doesn’t bode well for Garbutt

Everton want to keep experienced defender Leighton Baines at Goodison Park for one more season, according to the Liverpool Echo.

They report that the Toffees have made the club stalwart an offer to extend his current £70,000 a week (Spotrac) deal by another year and are waiting on his response.

Lucas Digne took over as first choice left back last season, but Marco Silva looks keen to keep Baines on as a seasoned backup.

Baines is apparently out in America at the moment, enjoying a family holiday and mulling over the decision to extend with those closest to him.

For the likes of 26-year-old Luke Garbutt, Silva’s desperation to keep Baines around really should signal that they have absolutely no future at Goodison any more.

Garbutt spent the season on loan at Oxford United – not really a good enough level at which to impress Silva anyway – and the offer laid down to Baines suggests he will now never make the grade on Merseyside.

At 26, Garbutt should have at the very least have established himself as a reliable backup option but has never been able to string together enough Toffees games to do so.

Even if Baines says no to an extension, Garbutt has been sent a clear message that he is no longer wanted around the club and should leave this summer regardless.
