Everton’s chances of luring Newcastle’s Salomon Rondon to Goodison receive boost

Salomon Rondon has shone for Newcastle United this season and as a Toon fan, you would be forgiven for thinking that your side would do anything to sign the Venezuelan star permanently.

The 29-year-old has scored 10 goals and created five more in his 27 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side. He is said to have a relegation release clause in his contract worth £16.5million.

But the Daily Mail is likely to have frustrated Newcastle fans, by claiming that owner Mike Ashley is only willing to spend £12million on the former Zenit St. Petersburg and Malaga forward.

A £12million offer for Rondon is unlikely to be accepted by West Brom – especially if they regain promotion to the Premier League. It remains to be seen if Rondon wants to remain in Newcastle.

But Newcastle’s inability to meet Rondon’s asking price means a permanent move is some way from being announced. That gives Everton the chance to steal in snatch Rondon from under Newcastle’s noses.

The Daily Star claimed in March that Everton were interested in Rondon. The Toffees have had to make do for the entire campaign without a first-choice striker under Marco Silva.

Though Dom Calvert-Lewin has impressed, he is not seen as the man to fire them towards the top six of the Premier League. Cenk Tosun has failed to prove his £27million fee, while Oumar Niasse is on loan at Cardiff City.

Another frustrating campaign for the Toffees will surely convince owner Farhad Moshiri to open the chequebook, and £16.5million for a proven Premier League goalscorer is certainly money well spent in this day and age.

Newcastle’s hesitancy to reach the asking price may see Everton swoop in and steal Rondon.
