Everton’s £25m Jordan Pickford deal looks bargain considering goalkeeper prices this summer

Everton lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday and will no doubt feel slightly aggrieved that they came away from the game empty-handed.

That said, despite good chances for Seamus Coleman and Bernard, Manchester United could have been out of sight were it not for one Everton man.

Jordan Pickford was in inspired form for the Toffees.

The England number one recently got an unfair amount of stick for his displays with his country. Despite his excellent distribution, his goalkeeping skills were called into question after errors against Spain.

Some fans, of other clubs, seem to enjoy getting on the unorthodox stopper’s back.

But even his most ardent critic would have to appreciate his display against United. Pickford made a string of incredible saves throughout the game. One on one, he looked imperious. Both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford failed when clean through against the Everton stopper.

Paul Pogba was also denied by Pickford. Not only did he save the Frenchman’s initial penalty, which Pogba then put away on the rebound, he also made an incredible save low to his left after the World Cup winner smashed a low strike at goal from inside the area.

Pickford has received plenty of stick and bait in recent weeks for his displays, mainly from those seemingly opposed to the evolution of the goalkeeping position. But based on this display, the £25 million man should not be doubted.

Considering that Liverpool paid a reported £66.9 million for Alisson and Chelsea £71.6 million for Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to the Guardian, that initial fee should now be considered an absolute bargain for Everton.

Everton fans will be very pleased to call him their number one.
