Everton youngster Nathangelo Markelo has been discussing his hopes for the future, including a message for former Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.
Everton snapped up the talented Dutchman in the summer of 2017 after he impressed in an international club tournament with FC Volendam.
The versatile midfielder, who can also play at right-back, has since established himself as one of Everton’s top rising talents.
He is now a Dutch under-21 international and has been speaking about his plans with Voetbal International in their ‘The Future of Oranje’ series.
Markelo made it clear that he wants to be playing for the Dutch senior side within the next two years and would like to do as an Everton player. He did, however, also admit, he would happily push his career through elsewhere.
“I hope within two years (to be a regular at Everton and senior Dutch international)…
“The Eredivisie is also an option.”
Markelo’s ambition is not unjustified. He is a fantastic talent and this season he has really started to thrive in David Unsworth’s under-23s’. In fact, some fans have even called on him to get a first-team chance.
Everton will undoubtedly be hoping to tie him down to a longer-term contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of this season.
If they can do that, and Markelo can continue to improve, then perhaps he will be on Dutch national team boss Ronald Koeman’s radar by 2021.
