Dusan Tadic left Southampton last summer after showing only glimpses of quality in the Premier League, joining Ajax for a measly £11.4million. Now, he is one of the most-feared attackers in Europe football.
The 30-year-old turned out 162 times for Southampton – scoring 24 goals and assisting 35 times. Not awful stats, but consistency was lacking in the 62-time Serbia international’s performances.
Everton were linked with a move for Tadic before he joined Ajax. Estadio Deportivo claimed Everton were set to rival Italian sides Juventus, AC Milan and AS Roma for Tadic’s signature. It is claimed his valuation was £40million.
But fast forward a few months and he is sold for just over a quarter of that figure. Everton will surely be ruing their decision to follow up on that interest and land Tadic for a bargain, given his current stats.
Tadic has been integral in Ajax’s run to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Ajax have also scored 111 goals in the Eredvisie – in just 32 league games. They sit top of the table by three points.
The ex-Saints star has scored an enormous 34 goals in all competitions this season, and created another 21 strikes in assists. Those stats are quite astonishing – being involved in 55 goals in one season is something you would expect from the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
It makes Tadic one of the best European attackers at the moment, given that Ajax are in the last four of the Champions League. Instead, Everton signed Brazilian stars Richarlison and Bernard.
Richarlison cost a whopping £50million and has impressed in patches, while Bernard is said to be the club’s highest earner on £120,000 (Spotrac).
It will be frustrating for Everton, because Tadic was available at a bargain £11.4million and will not be earning a contract like Bernard’s. He could have been a much better alternative, for a much cheaper price.
