Everton are being linked with a move for Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech this summer. The Moroccan international is said to be a target for the Toffees along with West Ham United – as reported by Calcio Mercato.
Ziyech joined the Dutch giants from FC Twente in the summer of 2016 and has gone on to establish himself in the first-team at the Amsterdam Arena. After scoring 10 goals for the club in 42 games last season he has eight in 33 this term, as well as 13 assists.
It is not only his form with Ajax that has caught the eye, as Ziyech will be a key player for Morocco at this summer’s World Cup.
Of course, not many Everton fans will be getting overly excited about the player considering the performances of the last man they signed from Ajax.
Last summer the toffees spent big to bring in Ajax captain Davy Klaassen. He cost the club a fee reported by the BBC to be in the region of £23.6 million. However, his move to Merseyside has been nowhere near a success. The 25-year-old has played just 14 times this season at Goodison Park and scored no goals. After being outcasted and touted to Napoli by Sam Allardyce, he finally returned to the Everton fold for the first time since December against Brighton earlier this month.
But it would be fair to say that Klaassen’s time at Everton might be up and fans will fear that Ziyech could be a repeat scenario.
Whilst the two do have similarities the Moroccan is certainly a more mobile player and perhaps will fit in better into English football than Klaassen.
In fact, the Everton flop might be a perfect treat to offer Ajax as bait to bring down any potential cost for signing Ziyech.
Everton could easily offer the Dutch side their former captain back this summer in exchange for Ziyech’s services and kill two birds with one stone.
Everton would be getting their hands on a new player and be cutting away some deadwood after a poor first season.
A Klaassen-for-Ziyech swap deal could be the best scenario for all parties involved.
