David Moyes certainly has a stronger Everton squad to choose from since the club moved to the Hill Dickinson stadium.
Summer recruits Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have gone straight into Moyes’ starting XI, and the likes of Thierno Barry will hope to also nail down a spot soon enough.
It spoke volumes that Everton had all of Carlos Alcaraz, Dwight McNeil and Tyler Dibling looking on from the bench during the Merseyside Derby, a trio capable of starting.
And across the long season to come, Moyes’ improved squad depth should prove invaluable.
That being said, it’s one of Everton’s more familiar faces who’s stood out to both Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist when discussing the most underrated players in the Premier League.
Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist hail Everton’s James Garner
Back in 2022, Everton recruited James Garner from Manchester United, a youngster who was always highly-regarded at Old Trafford.
And now pushing towards 100 appearances for Everton, it feels as if Garner is beginning to realise that rich potential.
In fact, the 24-year-old has even been proving his ability playing as a left-back this season – an extremely versatile talent.
And when discussing the Premier League’s most underrated players on talkSPORT on Tuesday morning, both Stelling and McCoist were keen to mention Garner.

Stelling simply began: “A manager’s dream.”
McCoist: “He’s old school, Jeff. Throw him a jersey and he puts it on, he’ll turn around, have a look at the number, and he’ll say that’ll do me, I’m playing there.
“The weekend summed him up perfectly, [Moyes] played Mykolenko for the balance in his team, who came in and played well.
“But you’ve got to try and sneak a point, what do you do? I’ll put Garner at left-back, where he played the previous week, and you know he did exceptionally well.
“You are absolutely right, no trouble at all, he’s a manager’s dream.”
David Moyes thinks James Garner is among the Premier League’s best
Speaking himself earlier this month, Moyes claimed that Garner was almost playing as well as anyone in the English top flight now.
It wasn’t so long ago that Tottenham were reportedly showing interest in Garner – a player who’s now really showing his worth on Merseyside.
And when praising Garner after his performances at left-back, Moyes said: “I think Jimmy’s form at the moment is up there with some of the best I’ve seen around the country at the moment. So, let’s hope that’s recognised.”
In terms of international call-ups, Garner is yet to play for England’s senior side but he has made 18 appearances for the U21s.
And ahead of next year’s World Cup, Thomas Tuchel might eventually look fondly upon a player who’s able to thrive in multiple positions, especially if his high level of performance continues.
