Everton are reportedly interested in a move for Villarreal winger Denis Cheryshev. According to Marca, the Russian has become one of Everton’s main targets to further improve their wide options this summer.
Everton fans are no strangers to links with Cheryshev. The Toffees have been linked with a move for the player on three separate occasions in the past but never under new management team Marco Silva and Marcel Brands.
Based on the World Cup it is easy to see just why Everton would want the player. Cheryshev was excellent for the home nation in Russia this summer. He scored four goals, with three of them among the best scored at the tournament.
However, Everton must also consider his club form. For the Yellow Submarine last season, Cheryshev scored just four goals and bagged three assists in 32 games, hardly the sort of form that warrants attention.
His performances were not good enough to be a regular in the side either. He spent most of the season on the bench at El Madrigal, completing only one full 90 minutes of football in the Copa Del Rey.
Cheryshev was not even supposed to be a starter for Russia this summer. He came in after a hamstring injury to Alan Dzagoev.
Everton should be concerned the World Cup was just a flash in the pan. Otherwise, they could end up paying out for a player who would not deliver on his summer promise.
