Everton’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool last Sunday looked like something of a turning point for Marco Silva’s reign, with the side effect of putting a dent in their biggest rival’s title push.
And when Silva’s side raced into a 2-0 lead at St James’ Park against Newcastle on Saturday, that feeling persisted against a team who have been in good form of late.
Everton had even enjoyed a slice of good fortune as well; Jordan Pickford – a former Sunderland player – was too pumped up and keen to impress on his return to the north east and piled into Salomon Rondon in the penalty area.
The England number one was fortunate to escape without a red card but atoned for his error instantly by saving the spot kick to keep Everton on course for a win.

But then the wheels came off. Rondon did eventually get on the scoresheet to half the deficit before two goals in the space of three minutes from Ayoze Perez meant that Newcastle snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
That put the pressure straight back onto Silva, who was riding high after engineering a passionate performance against the Reds at Goodison last week.
And some Toffees couldn’t contain their anger with their manager, with some calling for his head after an embarrasing collapse…
