Everton summer signing is best bargain since Dominic Calvert-Lewin – TBR View

If Everton do manage to finish inside the European positions this season, then a large part of their success will have been down to last summer’s activity in the transfer market.

The Toffees strengthened with proven players such as Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure, who have all made huge impacts at Goodison Park.

Another who moved to Merseyside is Ben Godfrey, who joined from Norwich City for around £25million (BBC).

The defender has proven to be a genius signing from manager Carlo Ancelotti and an argument could be made that he’s Everton’s best bargain signing since Dominic Calvert-Lewin, that’s when you factor in his age and potential.

Godfrey, 23, wasn’t expected to make such a fast start during his debut season at Everton, but he’s been one of the standout performers.

He’s such an athletic defender that is a real leader in his preferred centre-back position, plus he’s not moaned and shown such great versatility filling in at both full-back roles when needed.

His £25million fee doesn’t scream bargain at first glance, but his reputation is soaring by the week and being English will see his transfer value inflated.

Ancelotti described Godfrey as “fantastic” last month in an interview (BT Sport) and it’s clear how highly he rates him by the fact he starts the majority of games.

You’d have to go back to the remarkable £1.5million (Sky Sports) signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in 2016 to find a better Everton bargain.

Calvert-Lewin is now a Premier League goal machine and senior England international, with Godfrey surely in with a chance of joining him in the Three Lions squad at some stage in the future.

One glaring honourable mention is the Everton signing of Lucas Digne for £18million (BBC) back in 2018, who is one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Additionally, it’s worth noting Everton signed ex-midfielder Idrissa Gueye for £7.1million (Sky Sports) in the same window they snapped up Calvert-Lewin.

It’s very much subjective on who’s the best pound-for-pound signing, but what’s clear is Godfrey looks like an insane bit of business that will only get better and increase in value.
