Everton are hopeful that Leighton Baines will sign a new contract, according to The Liverpool Echo. Marco Silva wants Baines to sign a one-year deal to provide cover for Lucas Digne.

But an extension for Baines could have implications for Antonee Robinson’s immediate future. Robinson was hoping for a first-team breakthrough this season but he now looks set to head out on loan again.

With Baines staying for one more season, Robinson needs to use this loan spell to prove he should stay at Everton. It could be a make-or-break season for the youngster.

According to The Liverpool Echo, Everton are planning ahead for Baines’ exit in summer 2020 by scouring the market for new left-backs.

But Robinson needs to prove why Everton should save their pennies. If he can prove he is first-team quality, then Silva does not need to find a new left-back to compete with Digne.

Robinson has had two impressive loan spells now. He played 34 games for Bolton Wanderers and 26 games for Wigan Athletic in the past two seasons, helping both to safety.

The USA international now needs to test himself at a promotion-chasing side or in the Premier League. And this could be the real test of his readiness for Everton.
