Report: Everton handed boost in chase of 'fantastic' ace as European outfit look for potential replacements
Everton were handed a boost in their move for Chris Smalling after AS Roma started looking for potential replacements.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, the Rome-based outfit are keen on Antonio Rudiger and Merih Demiral.
However, a move for the Chelsea man is thought to ‘impregnable’, whilst the Old Lady are demanding €40m (£34.3m) for the Turk.
The Blues have been linked with a move for the former Manchester United defender. Reports earlier in the week claimed that the Serie A outfit wanted to ‘break even’ on a transfer for the 31-year-old.
Roma paid an initial £13.6m rising to a potential £18.1m depending on add ons for the centre-half last summer.
TBR View: Everton given glimmer of hope over Smalling move
The news regarding Roma’s search for a potential replacement means Everton have been a glimmer of hope over a move for Smalling.
Centre-half needs strengthening after last season’s poor level performance at the back.
The club conceded 48 goals across their 38 games in what was an underwhelming year for the outfit.
However, the injury problems proved an even bigger issue for the outfit.
Yerry Mina rarely stayed fit last season, struggling with multiple injuries throughout the campaign. Meanwhile, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate were both featuring at right-back due to the lack of options.
Smalling could be a sensational addition to the club in a similar way to Jonny Evans.
The Northern Irishman joined Leicester City from West Brom back in 2018 and has been a rock for the outfit. His experience has tied together the Foxes defence in their pursuit of Champions League football.
Smalling has years of experience with the Red Devils which would be a vital addition to the Goodison Park outfit.
Everton’s collapse at the back end of the 2020/2021 campaign spoke volumes. The lack of character and leadership was a key miss, a role which Smalling could fill.
