Everton should use Lyon’s interest in Gueye to steal a march in Ndombele race

Lyon are interested in signing Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye during the summer transfer window, according to French outlet Buzz Sport.

They report that after Paris Saint-Germain showed an interest in the 29-year-old during the summer window, he does not appear to see his future at Goodison Park.

That has apparently given Lyon encouragement that they can land Gueye to be the new central midfielder they want, as a more realistic option than Mexican international Hector Herrera.

And in January the Daily Star reported that the Toffees had an interest in one of Lyon’s midfield players, £75m-rated powerhouse Tanguy Ndombele.

The Star reported that the race for the midfielder’s signature is hotly-contested; with Manchester City, Tottenham, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona all in the hunt too.

That means that Everton will have to go some to win the chase for Ndombele – and that Gueye could be used as a much-needed trump card, both to get that lofty price tag down and swing the race back their way.

A part-exchange would be the more likely option, because Marco Silva looks to have precious little chance of getting to the front of the queue for one of Europe’s hottest midfielders otherwise.

Gueye looks to have his best days behind him and if he can help Silva shape a new, younger, more vibrant Toffees side then it could be a win for everyone involved.
