Everton’s problems in midfield have been well documented all season, which is why they should join Arsenal in reportedly pursuing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

According to football publication 90min, Arsenal are weighing up a move to sign the 22-year-old from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

The report adds that Manchester City are also considering activating a buy-back clause for the Brazilian central midfielder, who they sold to Villa for £15million (BBC) last summer.

Luiz has been one of the shining lights at Villa Park this season in his team’s fight against relegation and has looked the part especially since football resumed last month.

He is a midfield enforcer that can break up play in front of the defence with his aggressive tackling and reading of the game, plus he’s got a range of passing too.

Carlo Ancelotti is seriously lacking a physical presence in the centre of the park, which is why the Villa man could be ideal for Everton next season.

Everton could discover their new Idrissa Gueye

There is no doubt that Everton have been missing Gueye since he joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer, as he was the midfield engine that kept them ticking over.

Luiz is beginning to look perfectly suited to that role in the Premier League and that is why the Merseyside club must consider him as a target.

There are similarities between the pair in terms of their style, but the Villa man would be a sensible investment considering his age and also offers great composure in possession.
