Everton should consider Niels Nkounkou as left-back alternative

Everton are reportedly looking to continue their positive summer of transfer business by strengthening their defence.

The Toffees are in need of another central defender but it seems they are ready to back Jonjoe Kenny as the heir apparent to Seamus Coleman at right-back.

However, Lucas Digne’s regular replacement at left-back last season was veteran defender Leighton Baines and he has retired from football in recent months.

As reported by the Liverpool ECHO, a left-back is a priority this summer but the club are currently only looking at the possibility of loan signings.

But why should Everton waste money on a loan fee and wages when they could just give a summer signing they have already made a chance in the role.

The player in question is Niels Nkounkou. Everton spent a reported (La Provence) compensation fee of just £240,000 to bring the young Frenchman in from Marseille this summer with the hope of him being a long-term project at the club.

However, the youngster has impressed plenty of Everton fans with his performances so far this pre-season.

Perhaps instead of doing some more transfer business, Everton should relish in what looks to be an absolute steal and back the 19-year-old to be the alternative to his countryman Lucas Digne.
