Everton should consider ambitious swoop for Thomas Lemar

Everton tried and failed to sign Wilfried Zaha in the summer.

The Toffees reportedly launched a bid of £70 million plus Cenk Tosun and James McCarthy (Sky Sports), but were unsuccessful in their efforts.

Crystal Palace stood firm over their talisman, and Everton went ahead and snapped up Alex Iwobi from Arsenal instead.

Arguably, Everton have suffered as a result of their failure to land the £130,000-a-week star (Spotrac).

With Iwobi having featured mainly as a number 10, the club still have need for a wide player – and there might just be an option over in La Liga.

According to ESPN, World Cup winner Thomas Lemar is ‘desperate’ to leave Atletico Madrid with the club being linked to Dani Olmo and perhaps Everton ought to test the waters next month.

TBR’s view – Lemar would be a statement

It hasn’t really happened for Lemar this season at the Wanda Metropolitano, with the 24-year-old often being used from the bench.

Since joining the club from AS Monaco for €60 million/£52.9 million (Goal), he has failed to live up to expectation, and perhaps needs a change of environment.

Everton are a team that needs fresh impetus in the wide areas, and should consider attempting to liberate Lemar from his Spanish nightmare.

The 24-year-old has electric pace, trickery and does have an eye for goal as demonstrated during his time at Monaco.

What’s more, Everton don’t currently have any left-footed options in their attack.
