Premier League legend Alan Shearer has praised Everton duo Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin following their standout displays in the Toffees’ Premier League win last time out (PL website).
Carlo Ancelotti’s charges hosted Crystal Palace at Goodison Park on 8 February, a top-flight matchday spread out as part of the new winter break.
In that game, Everton extended their unbeaten run to seven games as Bernard opened the scoring in the 18th minute to take a slender lead into the interval.
Though Christian Benteke equalised in the 51st minute, the Toffees struck back through Richarlison just before the hour, and Calvert-Lewin added a third late on.
Both Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin were named in Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week as the matchday finally came to an end on Monday night.
Of the Brazilian, he wrote on the Premier League website: “Crystal Palace couldn’t live with his pace and strength, as he demonstrated with his magnificent solo goal.”
Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, was called “a revelation under Carlo Ancelotti, he showed his poacher’s instincts again with another close-range goal and also claimed an assist”.
Sometimes, a change in the dugout is just what’s needed to reinvigorate a team, and Everton’s decision to axe Marco Silva has reaped major dividends already.
The immediate boost under Duncan Ferguson was a great start, and now Ancelotti has built on from that work to get the team firing on all cylinders as per the players’ qualities.
Richarlison is a high-calibre player, and at just 22, it’s exciting to think how much he can kick on in the coming years – particularly under a renowned world-class coach like Ancelotti.
As for Calvert-Lewin, the Italian manager has talked about his qualities plentifully, and it looks as though he can also be finally hitting the potential many linked with Everton hoped he’d be reaching.
